TBBT 6x07: The Habitation Configuration

This week the show had two plots. Two completely unrelated plots. Unless you want to get into a whole metaphorical thing or say they were both about relationships or something like that, but I don't want to get into that nonsense. Purely in terms of story structure, you could lift out one of the plots and pop in a new one without any trouble. As the cast has grown larger, it's become nearly impossible to fit them all into the same plot line, so I expect this sort of thing will happen more in the future.

Plot the first:
Sheldon is doing an episode of his award-winning internet show "Sheldon Cooper Presents: Fun with Flags" featuring the flags of the Star Trek universe. As such, he invites his new buddy, TV's the internet's Wil Wheaton to help out.

It certainly looks like they're having fun.

While Sheldon and Wil are in front of the camera, Amy directs the action, and she's not at all impressed with Mr. Wheaton's performance. To the point that even a Shatner-esque performance isn't enough for her. They get in a bit of a fight, and since neither of them has a trailer to storm off to, Sheldon is forced to decide who should stay and who should go. Amy makes the mistake of using indirect language in an attempt to get Sheldon on her side and suggest that maybe things would be easier if she went home. Sheldon readily agrees, and now he's having a fight with his girlfriend... he doesn't know it, though.

Later, he Skypes her to prove to Leonard that she's not mad, but she's mad. She's mad in the way all women get mad when you don't take their side in an argument. In order to apologize, he buys her Star Trek: The Next Generation on DVD so she can see how awesome Wil is.

She doesn't appreciate the gift as much as she should.

With nowhere else to turn, Sheldon heads to the Cheesecake Factory to talk to Penny about girls and to drown his sorrows with some tea; she suggests the Long Island variety. He sucks down a couple with great alacrity and without realizing what they are. Drunk Sheldon is very easily convinced that Wil Wheaton done did his woman wrong, and that vengeance must be exacted: Texas style. He heads over to Wil's house and challenges him to a fight, then promptly pukes in his bushes. His woman's honour has been defended, but Wil and Amy won't work together. So, Sheldon is forced to take drastic measures and get a new guest host.

Hey kids, it's TV's LeVar Burton!

Plot the Second:
Bernadette and Howard have dinner at his mother's house, and afterwards, since it's late, he suggests that they spend the night there. Bernie's upset that they still aren't staying in their apartment full time, so Howie agrees to move all the rest of his stuff over to her place. When they're almost finished, he tells her a story about how he was the only one who could make his mother happy after his father left and about how lonely she is. Well, no husband of hers is going to break his mother's heart, so she immediately makes him move his stuff back.

The lesson is: Women are crazy.

What I Liked
-Once you explain who Wil Wheaton is, many people recognize him. That's the life of a minor celebrity all right.
-Home Town Buffet reminds Sheldon of his home town. Because there they also have a Home Town Buffet. At least it reminds someone of their home town.
-Penny and Sheldon talk about his full pubis of hair. Dick jokes are funny.
-LeVar Burton was available. I like when he just randomly shows up on Thursday night sitcoms. Download the new Reading Rainbow app for your kids, folks. Reading is FUNdamental.

What I Hated
-Howard ends up back at his mother's place. His character development has been surprisingly slow, considering he got married and went to space.
-Amy's apartment number is 314 and Wil Wheaton's house number is 1701. I can't count the number of times that particular gag has been done before.

They could've at least made it 1701-D.

Final Thoughts
Frakes on Castle and Wheaton and Burton both on The Big Bang Theory. Plus, I'm pretty sure I heard John de Lancie on Family Guy, and I know Patrick Stewart was on American Dad this week. But you know who I never see doing anything? Marina Sirtis. I'm not sure if it's because there aren't many roles for older ladies on TV or if she's just doing things I don't watch, though.

I'm not always a fan of making characters arbitrarily insane, but I guess in this case they're just trying to make the women as crazy as the men that they love, so it's okay. Eventually the only halfway sane one on the show is going to be Leonard, though.

This one hit 25 on the yet to be built laugh-o-meter, it had some good bits, and I'm giving it an extra half star for LeVar.
