Hawaii Five-0 3x05: Mohai

It's Halloween. Well, not really. It's Halloween on the show. An HPD officer comes across a traffic accident, but nobody's in either vehicle. Elsewhere, a woman in a sexy nurse costume is strapped to a metal bed frame. A sinister figure slowly sharpens a knife. The woman cries out, but no one can hear her, and the man with the knife casually walks over and starts carving into her. It's pretty gross.

When hacking people to death, always wear proper face protection.

At the McGarrett house, Kamekona is borrowing some face paint to complete his army guy costume while Steve uses Child's Play 2 as a method to put the moves on Catherine. It's been his go-to scary movie since he was 14, and it always gets the scared ladies to leap into his arms. But, just as he's about to get lucky, Danno comes knocking at the door. Grace decided she wanted to go trick-or-treating with her friends, so he's alone for the night and kinda depressed. As he's pouring his guts out to Catherine, McGarrett gets a call, and the 5-0 guys have to leave, and there's no candy for everyone.

The evidence at the accident scene shows that it wasn't really an accident. One of the vehicles was stolen and ran the other one off the road. They quickly get a hit on a credit card that belongs to the sexy nurse, and the guy who found it on the street points them to an alley where they find her purse, her wallet, and her corpse.

And an angry kitty.

After his preliminary examination, Max finds that a sizable portion of the dead woman's organs have been removed, and he initially believes it was so they could be put up for sale on the black market. But after some more investigation, he discovers that her organs were removed fairly haphazardly, so they wouldn't be viable for transplant, and she has a partial symbol impression on her skin.

See if you can guess what it is.

Kono checks out the dead woman's email account and finds out that on Halloween she was at a party at an abandoned mansion up in the mountains. McGarrett and Danny go to check the place out, and Steve tells him it's haunted. They don't find any ghosts, but they do find a passed out guy who threw the party. Conveniently, he has plenty of video of the party. It shows that the dead woman was dancing sexily with a vampire dude, and the two of them were followed out of the party by a guy wearing a goat head mask, so there may be another victim out there.

In a creepy basement somewhere, vampire guy is trapped in a cage while creepy goat dude sharpens his knife again. As he's about to get to work, his watch alarm goes off: It's time to give grandma her pills. But, she's out of heparin, so creepy knife dude has to go to the pharmacy to refill her prescription and buy some ice cream. While he's gone, the vampire breaks out of his cage and runs upstairs to call the police. He manages to get a call out to 911, but before he can explain the situation, grandma stabs him in the back.

At 5-0 headquarters, they figure out who the creepy knife guy is, and what he's doing. He's making a sacrifice to a pagan goat deity, so if vampire dude's still alive, he won't be for long.

"That thing's got boobs."

As the team races to the house, the killer returns to find vampire guy unconscious on the floor. Grandma tells him she's tired of cleaning up his messes, so he drags the body out the front door, pausing only briefly to put the ice cream in the fridge so it won't melt.

When McGarrett and the gang finally arrive, they find a blood trail, the creepy basement murder cages, and a grandmother who refuses to speak. An HPD officer takes her into custody, but on the way to the police station she fakes a heart attack, grabs his gun and kills him. She uses his phone to call her grandson, then shoots herself in the head. Kono and Chin trace the call and do some cell tower tracking magic to trace the killer to an altar where ancient Hawaiians used to make blood offerings back in the days when the blood god wanted blood. Danny and Steve get there just in time to kill the guy and stop his dark ritual.

Well, with the candles, I guess it was just a poorly-lit ritual. Not really dark.

Later that night, Catherine and Steve try to watch the end of Child's Play 2, but they get interrupted by Danny again. This time he has Grace in tow and they're making up for their lack of trick-or-treating the previous night. Unfortunately, McGarrett's out of candy, so instead of delicious treats, everyone sits down to watch The Notebook.

Ryan Gosling's abs are truly terrifying.

What I Liked
-Steve tries to get Danny out of his house by offering him some candy. It doesn't work, but you gotta do something to get people to leave when you're trying to score with your lady.
-Max helps solve the crime with the awesome power of a Microsoft Surface tablet. It was probably one of the better instances of product placement. They don't mention the name, and it actually sort of fits into the plot.
-Ted 'Theodore' Logan.

All we are is dust in the wind, dude.

What I Hated
-The grandmother was a creepy goat-worshipping invalid, but she still somehow managed to get custody of her grandson, even though he was mentally unbalanced. That's just crazy.

Final Thoughts
I wasn't a big fan of this episode. There's nothing particularly wrong with it, but it wasn't particularly memorable, either. I'm not sure if they were going for a really frightening vibe, but the whole human sacrifice thing was a lot more creepy than it was frightening. It didn't make my skin crawl, though, since I've seen that sort of thing on TV 100 times before.
